Living in a Paying Guest (PG) apartment can be an exciting experience, offering a blend of independence and community. However, maintaining harmony in a PG requires some consideration and etiquette. Even if you are a seasoned PG resident or new, here is a guide to help you navigate the do's and don'ts of living in a PG apartment.
Do’s
Communicate Openly
Good communication is the key to a smooth living experience. If staying with a roommate, always communicate about cleanliness, guests, and shared expenses early on. These should be the ground rules that you both set up at the start.
Do Respect Quiet Hours
You start living outside your home for studies, so respect the quiet hours, i.e, studying times for others also. Always remember if you don’t want to be disturbed while concentrating, there will be others also who want the peace.
Do Label Your Stuff
In the shared PG, always label your stuff to not to mix them up with others' good and this thing is required in the kitchen. The main motive is that you don’t know what mindset the other person has, so it's better to be safe than sorry.
Do Pay Rent and Bills on Time
Being punctual with payments helps maintain a good reputation and smooth relationships. It gives peace of mind so you can concentrate on other things well.
Do Keep Common Areas Clean
Wash your dishes, take out trash on your turn, and leave the bathroom clean after use. The cleanliness shouldn’t be seen as a work it is your responsibility.
Do Lock Up When Leaving
Security is everyone's responsibility—always double-check doors and windows. This is self-explanatory.
Do Build a Friendly Vibe
Greet people, share occasional meals, and participate in casual group chats. People living alone often miss the comfort of their home so this is necessary.
Don’ts
Don’t Be a Noise Nuisance
Avoid loud music, calls, or parties—especially late at night or early morning. Every one will not be a night owl as you so keep these things in consideration.
Don’t Use Others’ Belongings Without Permission
Whether it's shampoo or utensils, always ask first. Some people might get offended by this so try to understand their worry also.
Don’t Hog the Bathroom or Kitchen
Be mindful of time—others might be in a rush too. There is no need to be a bathroom singer in morning alway consider that there are several peoples also in the PG.
Don’t Bring Guests Without Notice
It’s courteous to inform roommates before inviting friends or family over. They also live outside their comfort zone. So suddenly seeing other people might make them uncomfortable.
Don’t Ignore Problems
If there’s a leak, pest issue, or broken appliance, report it early to the landlord. It is a safety issue for everyone so take it as seriously as other things.
Don’t Be Passive-Aggressive
Talk openly about issues. Leaving sticky notes or silent treatment rarely works.
Don’t Forget Emergency Contacts
Keep landlord, plumber, electrician numbers handy and share them with flatmates. Always keep in my mind that in tough time these people will come handy.
All set now enjoy your Work/ Studies
